To create an inclusive learning environment, it's important to adapt and make changes to the curriculum to accurately represent the students and the issues they face. Below are some ideas on how to redesign specific topics to improve learning for all students.
I redesigned a writing project conducted in a fifth-grade classroom during Black History Month to improve the cultural representation of the content. The renovation of this unit demonstrates my ability to engage students in creativity and inquiry. I redesigned this unit to allow students to research lesser-known but highly influential African-American figures from history. Please take a look at the lesson plans below to see how I incorporated these skills into the redesigned lesson plans.
In this blog post, I dig into student representation within the classroom and digital spaces. Looking "Beyond the Books" allows for the intentional diversifying of digital resources for students and the redesign of representation within the classroom. Through this research, I was able to show how to begin to create a better learning environment for all learners. The redesign presented in my blog post and the final infographic, accurately show the skills and needs for redesigning a classroom through multiple diverse sources.
In my Wicked Problem presentation, I take a closer look at the standardized testing crisis. Through research and intentional thinking, I aim to redesign schools' perspectives and applications of formal assessments. During the presentation, my peers and I demonstrated our ability to tackle a Wicked Problem, such as standardized testing, and redesign solutions that would benefit students. Ultimately, our goal is to redesign the perspective of education towards a more effective solution.
The Squishy Circuit Story Maker Ed lesson started with just a tool, Squishy Circuits. From there, it was taking a subject like writing and redesigning a lesson by incorporating technology and project-based learning. I was able to take a subject, like writing, and redesign it into something more engaging and creative. Within this project, I was able to take my creativity and make a whole new lesson that allows students to inquiry and create within the world of writing. Read more about my process of redesigning this lesson and the detailed lesson plans in my blog post.
