I currently teach in Ionia Public Schools at Boyce Elementary. Out of the five elementary schools in the district, Boyce is located in the more rural area of the county. Since our school is situated outside of town it is surrounded by farms and woods, the perfect location for our Boyce Scenic Trail.
This is my third year teaching 5th grade and I love it! I enjoy teaching this age group because they are very independent which allows for me to create a more student-lead classroom. I have an average Homeroom of 25 diverse learners Check out my Harry Potter-Themed classroom below!

The Transition to Middle School
5th grade is the last stop at our school before students head off to the middle school. We spend a great deal of time throughout the year working on responsibility and helping students get ready for this big transition. Therefore, my teaching partner and I, switch classes in the afternoon to help kids get used to changing classes for different subjects. For the past two years, I have taught Math and Science to all 5th graders, while the other teacher focuses on Language Arts and Social Studies.
At Ionia Public Schools, we use the math curriculum of Bridges. The majority of 5th grade math standards focus on fractions, division, and geometry. The photos displayed here are of student posters that were created to review the mathematical concepts of Unit 1.
For science, we follow Mystery Science lessons. This curriculum includes hands-on activities and units like the Web of Life, where my students have the chance to play games like Eat or Be Eaten. So far this year they have been able to create and observe their very own mold terrariums.
