From 2019-2022, I was the president of Marquette University's Art Club. As Art Club's president, I was been responsible for leading meetings with the club's other officers, brainstorming ideas for new events, reaching out to arts organizations in the Milwaukee area for collaboration, planning the events themselves, and acquiring art supplies. However, Art Club wouldn't be anywhere near what it is today without its faculty advisor, Lynne Shumow, who allowed us to use the Haggerty Museum of Art for our general meetings and has a seemingly endless repertoire of professional connections. Prior to my time as the club's president, Art Club only had 2 or 3 meetings per semester. However, my officers and I worked tirelessly to establish well-attended bi-weekly meetings, large-scale collaborative events with other student organizations, and a sense of community unlike anything I imagined we would have.
The image in the center (from Google Arts and Culture) shows one of our general meetings at the Haggerty Museum of Art. These meetings allow people who are interested in art to explore new art-making media, meet different people who enjoy making art, and relax for an hour or two with a low-stress creative outlet. We explored many different media, such as watercolor, charcoal, ink, and even occasionally pumpkins for events around Halloween. Marquette’s Art Club seeks to cultivate an environment of open-mindedness and acceptance through the creation and sharing of art. We value the importance of the individual and encourage connectedness between our members, so that has been its primary emphasis.
