In this event, Art Club collaborated with Marquette’s LGBTQ+ Center and students in Professor Ed de St. Aubin’s course entitled Topics in Psychology: Queer Self to educate Marquette's students and bring awareness to the Transgender Day of Remembrance. As Art Club's president, I attended several meetings with Professor de St. Aubin's class and the leaders of Marquette's LGBTQ+ Center to discuss our vision for the event, allocate materials, and find ways to bring education to the forefront of this exciting project.
This collaboration existed as a public art project in which students could contribute to a Keith Haring-inspired painting after first learning a fact about the history of the LGBTQ+ community in Milwaukee. Keith Haring's style was chosen largely because of Marquette’s historical connection with his artwork, as he visited Marquette in 1983 to paint the construction fence around the Haggerty Museum of Art as it was being built.
