Inquiry #5

Why did Russia get banned from the Olympics in 2019?

Introduction

Russia is a country known to millions, it's a country where people are meant to be free and have fun, but for others it’s a competitive country, wanting to compete and win medals. But in this presentation Benji and I will be showing you how that didn't really go to plan.

What is the country of Russia [History of Russia]?

What is Russia? Russia is a country.A country that stretches over a vast expanse of eastern Europe and northern Asia. Once the preeminent republic of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, Russia became an independent country after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in December 1991.

What’s the Russian history behind all of this? The traditional start-date of specifically Russian history is the establishment of the Rus' state in the north in 862, ruled by Varangians.

Russia is a country close to 14 different countries such as Azerbaijan, Belarus, China, Estonia, Finland, Georgia, Kazakhstan, North Korea, Latvia, Lithuania, Mongolia, Norway, Poland, and Ukraine.

What is Russia's history in the Olympics?

Over the most recent twelve Games (since 1996 to 2016), Russia's 546 total medals, including 196 gold medals, are second only to the United States. Russia hasn’t participated in the Olympics since 2016 to 2020. Russia was supposed to participate this year, but then their punishment was reduced for 2 years.

At the Sochi Olympics in 2014 the International Olympic Committee said on Friday it had banned 11 Russian athletes for life after they committed doping offences at the 2014 Sochi winter games. They were also stripped of their medals and banned from future Olympic events, the IOC Disciplinary Commission said

In six appearances Russian athletes have won a total of 426 medals at the Summer Olympic Games and another 120 at the Winter Olympic Games.

What caused Russia to get banned from the Olympics?

Those tuning into the Tokyo Olympics may have noticed that Russian athletes are competing under the flag of the ROC, or Russian Olympic Committee, rather than their native country. That’s because the 335 Russian athletes participating in this year’s Summer Games are considered “neutrals” due to the fact that Russia is currently banned from the Olympics. Why is Russia banned?

Russian Athletes have been banned for doping, injecting steroids into your blood. Which increases your muscle mass and energy, and could get infected by it.

Russia caused the problem, they are the ones to solve it. 200 athletes have been caught doping, that's more the ½ of the competitors they have. Russia had to change their flag and name for doping, and caused themselves to get banned for 4 years.

Will Russia have a second chance to compete in the Olympics?

Russian athletes are still trying to find a way to compete in the Tokyo Olympics, due to COVID-19 the Tokyo Olympics has stopped. They will be participating in the following year, but they are banned from competing in the FIFA World Cup.

After doping charges against its athletes, Russia was banned from participating in any international sporting event till 16 December 2022, which includes Tokyo Olympics, Paralympics, Winter Olympics and FIFA World Cup, so yes they will be able to participate in the future olympics but for now they are still banned.

Why was Russia allowed to change their flag and name to continue competing?

Athletes aren't competing under the Russian flag because of a punishment handed down by the World Anti-Doping Agency. During that two-year period, athletes that weren't involved in the Russian doping scandal are still able to compete in Olympic competition.

Despite Russia's ban from international athletic events, athletes are able to compete in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics under a neutral party known as the ROC.

Why was Russia allowed to compete as ROC if they were banned? The “ROC,” or “Russian Olympic Committee,” is a group of athletes from Russia who are allowed to compete under this special designation because their country is banned due to a “state-sponsored doping program.”

Has Russia been caught breaking the laws in the Olympics prior to the last one?

Russia has been caught breaking the Olympic Laws since 2010. Russian athletes have been stripped of more medals than any other country, 29 medals were stripped from Russian competitors relating to the 2008 and 2012 games alone.

What has Russia done and reacted to getting banned over the past 4 years? When it’s the Russian Olympic Committee. Officially, Russia is banned from competing in Tokyo for previous doping offences. But viewers would be forgiven for thinking otherwise. A team of 335 athletes from Russia is competing under the name of the “ROC”, wearing white, blue and red uniforms, and winning plenty of medals. Russia has repeatedly violated anti-doping laws.

If Russia wanted to compete as a country in the future olympics how could they earn the Olympics' trust?

In 2019, the World Anti-Doping Agency banned Russia from all international sporting competitions, including the Olympics, for four years over a doping scandal. The punishment was cut in half to two years by the Court of Arbitration for Sport following a 2020 appeal and now ends in December 2022.

Russia's four-year ban from global sports was halved on Thursday by a court in Switzerland, a decision that could signal the end of its yearslong battle with antidoping regulators who had accused the country of running one of the most sophisticated doping schemes in history in pursuit of sporting glory and the Olympics.

Should Russia deserve to participate in the future Olympics, as Russia again?

In our opinion we don't feel like Russia deserves to be in the future olympics. Even though they are allowed, I reckon they made the wrong choice. The reason why is because look at the amount of athletes that have done doping, over 200, 200!! And over 50 medals have been stripped from them. It's awful.

Systematic doping of Russian sports men and women has resulted in 43 Olympic and tens of world championship medals being stripped from Russian competitors, the largest number from any country, more than four times the number of the runner-up, and more than 30% of the global total, this information show you that russia don't really deserve a second chance.

Why do we want Russia not to participate in the future Olympics, is because. What happens if they do it again, they could dope again but what if they don’t get caught. Russia probably would want to get revenge right? Russia could be the world's best Olympic team. It’s a fair point if they do compete but under ROC; Russian Olympic Committee. They will continue on competing in the future Olympics, and we have nothing to do about that.
