Ancestry Inquiry

Intro

My ancestor is from Samoa and immigrated to New Zealand in 1996, then got married here in 1998. The population in Samoa now is over 199 thousand people. Samoa’s population in 1996 was 171 thousand. Over the 25 years only 28 thousand people have moved to Samoa. What’s been happening over the 25 years in Samoa. There was a measles outbreak in Samoa 2019, plus a COVID-19 test last year luckily it was negative. Other than that everything has been fine. We have cousins, nephews and nieces from other countries but my ancestor chose New Zealand because she wanted to meet her husband's family.

Push Factor 1

The reason why my ancestor immigrated to New Zealand. My ancestor decided to live here in New Zealand because her great great grandfather lived here way back in the days. Then she got married here and decided New Zealand has a better future and better life. She moved from house to house, she wanted to find a good house before she had kids. We moved from Auckland to Tauranga, my brother and sister were born up in Auckland. My ancestor decided to move to Tauranga because her sisters lived here, while my ancestor husbands sisters were up in Auckland.

Push Factor 2

Poverty, there is not much money in Samoa. There’s been a lack of access to education, youth unemployment and underemployment. My ancestor told me she moved from Samoa, because she wanted a brighter future. Her husband was from New Zealand who visited Samoa. He stayed in Samoa for a few years. My ancestor loved her family and loved her country so much. She was poor and didn’t have money to go anywhere. There was barely any money her family had. Her husband decided to come down to New Zealand with her because his family lived there, and her family agreed.

Discussion of Push Factor

Why did my ancestor leave her family? She didn’t know that his family was from New Zealand before she dated him. He asked her if she would like to come to New Zealand to see his family. My ancestor couldn’t understand or speak English but her family understood him and said yes. So she went with her husband to New Zealand.

Pull Factor

There are optional job opportunities in New Zealand. In Samoa there are jobs but not as many jobs as Other countries. We know that New Zealand doesn't have the most jobs in the world. It’s hard looking for a job in Samoa. Because in Samoa everyone wants to have a job. My ancestor took us to New Zealand to get a job and help her. There are more jobs hiring in New Zealand than Samoa. If we lived in Samoa everything would be different. My ancestor said she would leave her job till she’s dead.

Pull Factor 2

New Zealand, has been controlling Samoa back in the day for over 5 years since 1914. New Zealand controlled Samoa protecting them from WW1. So not only did New Zealand take control of Samoa, they were protecting them. New Zealand has higher standards than Samoa. We don’t know why it was only New Zealand protecting Samoa. If we were that in danger in WW1 then there should have been more countries protecting us. Since New Zealand risked their lives not knowing if Samoa’s safe or not, they were the only soft hearted country who cares for others. Before New Zealand was controlling Samoa, it was Germany. Germany was controlling Samoa for 14 years, 1900 - 1914 then New Zealand popped in. Germany took over Samoa because, of the outbreak war, Samoa was a threat to Germany.

Discussion of Pull Factor

Why did Samoans immigrate to New Zealand? Many Samoans moved to New Zealand for greater opportunities and a better education for their children. New Zealand has a better and safer environment around this world. The population in New Zealand is over 4.917 million. The only bad thing about New Zealand is, we have the highest teen suicide rate. Teens think not living is a good thing to do, when there are people they don’t know care about them, and there are better things to do in life. There are Opportunities out there waiting for you and a family of your own. The population is not that bad. It's good we have fewer people here than in other countries. New Zealand is a free country, where everyone should feel safe and comfortable.

Conclusion

Samoa is Great. Samoa is a great place to stay. Samoa is beautiful, it’s filled with many surprises. Once you go to Samoa you don’t wanna come back. There are heaps of coconut trees, and many waterholes. There are real myth legends in Samoa, and one of them is about a mother and a daughter who turned into turtles after falling into the water, they only respond to you if you yell out the chant. With the coconut trees you have to climb the tree, or use the coconut stick, you only use it if you can’t climb the tree. I’m proud of my culture, I’m proud of who we are, there is no other culture I would wanna be. When I go to Samoa, next to my house there is a waterhole, and you can swim in any clothes, it doesn’t have to be swimming togs it can be anything. There are places where you can shop and get clothes. There are also shops and restaurants in Samoa. Samoa has changed a lot you just have to find out going to Samoa.
