Abstract:
This grant application seeks to fund an initiative aimed at building solidarity and community among an underprivileged community in the rural South African region of Mpumalanga. The initiative will focus on improving knowledge, skills, living conditions, and the environment, and promoting a mindset that supports positive collective action for rights and responsibilities. The use of iNaturalist and indigenous knowledge will be leveraged to collect comprehensive data on the biodiversity of the area, which will inform decisions about site management and conservation. The initiative aims to connect the local community with global communities of individuals willing to act in solidarity to advance common solutions to shared global goals. This initiative aligns with the principles of global citizenship and open science, aiming to create a system that works for individual cases considerations and quality of personal life.
Assumptions that underpin this initiative:
The community members have the capacity to be agents of change and to drive positive social and environmental outcomes.
Access and support are fundamental requirements to empower underprivileged communities to address social conditions that perpetuate lack of personal opportunities, collective vision, sense of belonging, and agency.
Solidarity within the community of life is a key principle for achieving sustainable development goals, including social justice, human rights, bio-cultural diversity, empowerment, and well-being of human communities.
Indigenous knowledge and local expertise are essential to achieving the goal of sustainable development and biodiversity conservation.
Desirable outcomes for inclusive communities and we all:
Increased community solidarity and mutual aid leading to a sense of belonging and empowerment for community members.
Improved knowledge and skills for community members to take positive collective actions towards sustainable development.
Enhanced biodiversity conservation and management through the use of iNaturalist and indigenous knowledge, leading to improved environmental conditions for all.
Increased awareness and appreciation of the cultural significance of the site, leading to the development of cultural tourism programs that respect and celebrate local traditions.
The initiative will contribute to the achievement of sustainable development goals, including social justice, human rights, bio-cultural diversity, and well-being of human communities.
