Our History

Belmar Junior Lifeguard Picture Day 2001.

Our Humble Beginnings

Established in 1990 by Belmar Lifeguard Kevin O'Donnell, the Belmar Junior Lifeguards program originated as an initiative to provide local kids with an opportunity to explore the world of lifeguarding. Kevin O'Donnell's vision laid the foundation, passing the reins to Brian McGovern, who later entrusted the program to Erica Coviello. In 2022, Nicolette Contella assumed the leadership role, bringing fresh perspectives to the program.

Throughout its 33-year history, the Belmar Junior Lifeguards program has remarkably had only four directors, a testament to their unwavering commitment to the program's mission. This consistency reflects the dedication of each director in maintaining and advancing the program's goals.

With approximately 200 participants hailing from Belmar and surrounding towns, the program continues to thrive as a community-driven initiative. The enduring legacy and limited number of directors underscore the program's stability and its ongoing impact on the lives of young participants.
