Visual Schedules
Most of us use some sort of a visual schedule on a daily basis, whether a calendar on our cell phone or even a paper planner (gasp!). We love using visual schedules with our students and children for three reasons:
They encourage independence. Instead of having to remind our little of each individual step, they can complete the tasks independently. Even our younger kids or learners who need more support can use object or picture schedules to know what is coming next.
They can reduce anxiety. Visual schedules allow our kiddos to know how many steps they need to complete and which step is next in the sequence.
They can prevent problem behaviors from happening. Yep, you heard us right. Visual schedules are a proven evidence-based strategy that can actually prevent our little ones from engaging in problem behaviors!
When using visual schedules, it is important to introduce and explain the pictures beforehand, remind your child or student to use it, and discuss any changes in the typical daily routine.
