An essential aspect of behavior management is being able to examine the events that happen before a behaviors. The ABC strategy is a methodological approach to creating the behavior you desire your students to have and alleviate unfavorable behaviors from occurring. Each letter is an acronym that allows teachers to analyze the behavior of their students:
A-antecedent: what happened before the behavior?
B-behavior: what is the actual behavior occurring?
C-consequence(correction): what is the response to the behavior.
The ABC method allows teachers to analyze the cause and occurence of behaviors. Evaluating occuring behaviors, allows teachers to understand and reflect on what causes a particualar behavior and strategically plan for how to address it. It is a comprehesnive design that alows teachers to understand why a behavior is happening.
If a behavior occurs repeatedly, the ABC method allows you to observe if a pattern is occurring and the reason for its occurrence.
There are many facets that can influence behavior. Utilizing the ABC method can allow teachers to have a useful tool to help restructure their behavior management plans and individualize it for each student (Matyas, 2022).
