Use of Qwickly Attendance NFC – 2026
With this system, students use the Qwickly app on their mobile phones to scan the NFC tag located on their desk, which automatically generates a live seating chart.
The NFC-based attendance system will be available in standard classrooms in the IE Tower starting January 19 and will be extended to Segovia shortly. Please note that this rollout does not include mobile classrooms or laboratories at this stage.
For now, please take attendance using Qwickly with the QR code or the list option. When NFC becomes available in your classroom, you will be able to use this new system. This way, all attendance sessions will remain centralized in Qwickly.
To learn how it works:
• See the Qwickly Attendance NFC Guide for Faculty.
• You can stop by our drop-in hours on January 21 th from 13:30 to 15:30 at the IE Tower (Classroom T-20.03).
• Additional drop-in hours in Segovia will be announced soon.
These tools are the first step in a broader system upgrade, and we will continue refining features throughout the semester.
Your feedback is extremely valuable—we welcome suggestions at milena.janowska@collab.ie.edu
Coming next:
• Interactive live seating chart
• Participation tracking
Important: Student Code of Conduct
We needed to replace over 5000 NFC tags due to students' vandalism. We ask all faculty to explicitly remind students of their responsibilities regarding classroom equipment.
According to the IE Code of Conduct:
III.1.3. Respect and Correct Behaviour – Lack of respect for property Misuse or damage of university property—including buildings, furniture, equipment, educational materials, trademarks, and other intellectual property—is strictly prohibited.
Any attempt to remove, break or manipulate the NFC tags constitutes a violation of the Code of Conduct. The Provost’s Office has reinforced that such actions will carry disciplinary consequences.
There are 2 tools available in Blackboard to record classroom attendance:
· Qwickly Attendance : (External tool) offers 3 ways to take the attendance that you can alternate.
NFC -
QR code: At the beginning of each session the professor has to open the application which will generate a QR code that students have to scan with their mobile phone to register their presence in the classroom.
Manually - roll call. Using the LIST option.
· Blackboard Attendance: (Native)is a manual control tool. The professor has to do a roll call.
Bear in mind that these tools are not connected so if you start using one of them, it is not possible to copy the attendance from one tool to the other one. (unless you do it manually click here to know how to add a past session to Qwickly Attendance)
It is very important:
(1) that the session date is correct. If you add a session manually after the class has ended, make sure to enter the correct date.
(2) You must mark students as "Retakers" using that option.
(3) In case of a double session, meaning two sessions on the same day, you must take attendance twice.
For DOUBLE SESSIONS:
option A. take the attendance again (step 3) or
option B. take the attendance manually
Qwickly is an external tool, by default you will find it under the course conten area.
Check if Qwickly has been added to your course.
(you will only need to do this step once on each course you teach)
Once inside the course
Press the + pluss icon under the Course Content area.
Press Content Market
Inside Content Market, scrooll down until you find the Qwickly Attendance tool
Click the pluss sign
You will see that the Qwickly tool has been added to your course
(you will only require to do this step the first time you use it on this course)
(In order to take the attendance, be sure first, you make it visible to students )
Press Qwickly Attendance to access the tool from Course Content. (launch LTI tool)
From the left menu press Attendance /
Check in / Registrarse
Take Attendance / Tomar asistencia
Starting students check in will allow students to check in on their own devices.
A QR code will be generated on the screen that students will need to scan using their Qwwickly Attendance App (on their moviles)
Session Title If you leave it blank, the system by default will add today's date to the title (you can add information e.g 1st of double session)
Start check in /Iniciar Registro. This will launch the QR code
Once the QR code is launched, be sure to display it on the big screens so that the students can scan it easily.
Ask the students to open the APP on their phones and scan the code.
(Note that the QR code changes every second, to avoid students passing the code to classmates that they are not in class.)
If a student has problems using the app, don´t waste time, just write down the name of the student and later you will be able to mark it as present.
You can end the check in before the check in period is finished.
Once you stop the check in case, you press start check in again, a different column (session) will be created. In other words, you can not resume the check in for the same session using QR code. If you need to update the attendance for one specific session, access RECORDS /REGISTROS from the menu on the left.
For DOUBLE SESSIONS press start check in again or you can do it manually from Records/Registros.
If the Program Management (PM) informs you about a student who is a RETAKER, you need to manually change the status for the specific session/student.
Go to RECORDS/REGISTROS.
Click on the box.
Select RETAKER and click UPDATE.
If the Program Management (PM) informs you about a student who is EXCUSED from attending a specific session (e.g., for medical reasons), you need to manually change the status for the specific session/student.
Go to RECORDS/REGISTROS.
Click on the box.
Select EXCUSED and click UPDATE.
In case you need to take the attendance manually or add attendance columns from past sessions, (for example for doble sessions)
If you add an attendance session manually, it is extremely important to set the date of the session correctly.
