My Dad went to school up to and including the ninth grade. He was living in Binghamton, New York (it is upstate). His teacher made the class say the "Lords Prayer" every morning after the pledge of allegiance to the flag. One day he defied her and would not say it by stating it was a religious prayer and the Constitution of the United States stated we were a nation where we had the option of saying a prayer in a public run institution. He lost that debate with the teacher and left school. He was really ahead of his time. People like my Dad who stood and are still standing up for separation of school and church is what is really keeping this country free for people of all or no religion. This was about 1904 and it took many decades for public schools to recognize he was right. I do remember when I was in elementary school and we said the pledge to the flag every morning there was one little boy who stood tall and did not recite it. I found out later he was a Jehovah Witness and they do not pledge allegiance to anyone except God - my father was RIGHT.
