Cold Lake Medical Clinic (MCC)
One of Council’s most impactful initiatives has been the creation and expansion of the Cold Lake Medical Clinic, operated under a Municipally Controlled Corporation (Cold Lake Primary Care Medical Clinic Ltd.).
Created in early 2023, the MCC was established to help address a local physician shortage. The clinic was purchased by the City for $1.8 million, funded through reserves with no debt or additional taxation.
A board of five members (two City Council representatives and three community members) oversees operations.
Since the City took over, the number of practicing physicians has grown from two to five, with more expected.
Council is supporting a $4 million expansion plan, including possible addition of a second floor, expanded parking, and increased clinical capacity to host 9–15+ physicians.
The MCC model gives Cold Lake more control over health care access, recruitment, and community care—resolving a long-standing issue dating back to 2006.
I am so very proud to have been part of a council that looked for out of the box solutions to this concern. In 2021, 40% of the residents of Cold Lake were without a doctor or medical practitioner.
