Fantasy and science-fiction translation is a special area of literary translation that deals with imaginary worlds, invented cultures, fictional technologies, magical systems, alien civilizations, and alternative realities. These genres require the translator to work not only with language, but also with world-building, terminology, symbolism, and genre atmosphere.

One of the main challenges in fantasy and science-fiction translation is the translation of invented terms. Authors often create new names for places, races, magical objects, technologies, institutions, or social systems. The translator must decide whether to preserve the original term, adapt it, translate its meaning, or create a new equivalent in the target language.

Fantasy translation often requires attention to mythology and folklore. Many fantasy works are based on legends, epic traditions, medieval imagery, magical creatures, heroic journeys, and symbolic objects. The translator should preserve the atmosphere of mystery, adventure, and cultural depth.
