Module Aim

The aim of this module is to introduce students to the principles and challenges of folklore translation. The module explores the linguistic, cultural, symbolic, and stylistic features of folklore texts, including myths, legends, fairy tales, folk tales, and oral storytelling traditions. Students will examine how translators preserve cultural identity, oral narrative style, symbolism, repetition, and traditional expressions while adapting folklore for readers from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds. The module also develops students’ ability to apply appropriate translation strategies to culturally specific and stylistically complex folklore texts.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be able to:

1. define folklore translation and explain its main characteristics;

2. identify oral storytelling features, formulaic expressions, and symbolic elements in folklore texts;

3. analyze culture-specific elements and their translation challenges;

4. distinguish between preservation, adaptation, explanation, and other folklore translation strategies;

5. translate short folklore extracts while preserving cultural atmosphere and narrative style;

6. evaluate how translation choices affect symbolism, rhythm, repetition, and cultural meaning in folklore texts.
