After an NBC Charlotte investigation into teachers behaving badly and still being allowed in the classroom, now the state is pushing to make criminal background checks a requirement. As it stands now, it's up to local school boards to decide if they want to do a criminal background check-- that would change if this legislation goes through, which would make it required. It is a story we've been on for months: teachers in charlotte classrooms with questionable backgrounds. NBC Charlotte first sat down with Katie Cornetto, the attorney for the state school board, in February when she said state education leaders have been pushing for more help investigating teacher misconduct since 2010 when a task force revealed there just wasn't enough staff. State education leaders also requested legislation allowing the state to do fingerprint background checks on potential teachers.

Several new laws went into effect Tuesday in North Carolina. Among them is a somewhat controversial law that loosens the state's background check requirements to own a handgun. Christy Clark is part of the group Moms Demand Action, and spent months working with state legislators to amend House Bill 562, specifically the provision about background checks. "While we don't like everything that has come through this bill the way it remains, we're happy we were able to preserve the background check system," Clark said. As a result, North Carolina remains one of 18 states that still require background checks for handgun sales.
Parents were shocked to learn about the rash of charges against teachers, but even more by what came next. “Would you be surprised to hear school districts are not required to do background checks before they hire a teacher?” “Yes, I would be surprised,” said Carlissa Sanders, whose eyes went wide when NBC Charlotte asked that question. “It’s my children and I would want them to have the safest environment.” Right now, North Carolina school districts must have a policy for vetting teachers, but the state does not require a background check.
