Field (as related to DBs)

• An attribute of a record in a database table. You can think of a field like the “heading” of a column, or a label on a container of values. (Metabase, 2026)

Record (as related to DBs)

• A group of related data with the same structure. Just like in a traditional spreadsheet, records in a relational database are stored as horizontal rows within a table, and contain values that correspond with that table’s fields, or columns. (Metabase, 2026)

Query

• A request for data. (SolarWinds, 2026)

DBMS (Database Management System)

• A collection of multiple software services that work together to store, compute, maintain, structure, and deliver the data as part of a product. (Knight, 2024)

Data

• Raw figures and facts collected to be processed. (Elmira, 2025) 

Information

• The output of processed, organized, or structured data is presented in a form that can be understood. (Elmira, 2025)

Knowledge

• The realization and understanding gained through experience, learning, and the application of information. It is the ability to read and apply information in a specific context. (Elmira, 2025)

Wisdom

• Wisdom builds upon understanding how things are from knowledge and transitions us to making judgements about why things are. (Grimm, 2023)
