For this project, I had to find and share examples of cybersecurity incidents in the news and evaluate my sources.
The University of Mississippi Medical Center had to shut down its clinics for over a week after a ransomware attack knocked out key systems like the Epic electronic health record and even phone and email access. Hospitals stayed open, but staff had to switch to old-school paper methods to keep treating patients. The team worked with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and cybersecurity experts to figure out what happened and contain the damage. By early March, things were improving—records were accessible again, clinics reopened, and staff started rescheduling missed appointments with extended hours. It’s a reminder that ransomware attacks can seriously disrupt healthcare and take a while to fully recover from.

Booking.com has been dealing with a data breach that exposed customer details like names, emails, phone numbers, and booking history. Hackers are now using that info in “reservation hijack” scams, pretending to be hotels and trying to trick travelers into sending money. Cybersecurity experts from companies like Norton say the stolen data makes these scams more believable because criminals can reference real trips and personal details. Booking.com has warned users and tightened security, but hasn’t shared how many customers were affected or exactly how the breach happened. This situation shows how travel sites are becoming bigger targets for increasingly convincing cyber scams.
