Maternal and child health has always been a vital part of my life, from my freshman year as an undergraduate student at the university at North Carolina at Greensboro, in my Global health class we watched a documentary about women and children in different countries and that struck out to me, being that I am a descendant of African parents from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Knowing that I could use my degree in go back and help the people in my country was a very vital decision-making process for me to decide to go into public health. 55.3 black women in the United States of America die from childbirth that is 2.9 more than the average white woman here in America. Now imagine the women in 3rd world countries like Africa what are the statistics for that? Without proper care and proper tools to help these countries, these women are bound to not having access that we as Americans have, and that what I want to change! As a public health official, I want to be the one person in my generation or one of the people in my generation that goes back and does something for my country.
While in undergrad I was an intern at the YWCA Greensboro helping with a special program Healthly moms, Healthy Babies. Where i Assist senior project managers in overseeing schedules and milestone management weekly.Obtain weekly project status from all team members daily. Implement and improve the project management mechanisms.Prepare and assist in project documentation daily. Document resource needs and availability daily. Organize and schedule team meetings once every two weeks. This was my way of seeing if Maternal and Child Health was really the route I wanted to take, And it was.
