Student Choice Competency #1 (according to your Appendix A)
Navigating the initial deliverable of reviewing and organizing content on the North Carolina Serious Illness Coalition's website, I delved into the critical competency of cultural competence in communicating public health content. This task necessitated collaboration with Coalition members to develop content tailored to diverse stakeholder groups, including patients, providers, the public, and policymakers. Throughout my internship experience, this competency unfolded as a cornerstone in effective public health communication. As I engaged in discussions and collaborated with team members, I actively acknowledged and incorporated cultural nuances into the content development process. Recognizing that different audiences have distinct needs and perspectives, I worked to ensure that the information resonated authentically with each group.
The development of content for the website served as a tangible demonstration of my progress in mastering cultural competence in public health communication. For instance, when addressing patients, the language and tone had to be empathetic and accessible, acknowledging the human side of healthcare. Conversely, crafting content for policymakers necessitated a more formal and data-driven approach. By actively participating in these content creation processes, I honed my ability to navigate the intricate web of cultural diversity within the public health landscape. This internship experience underscored the critical role cultural competence plays in crafting messages that are not only accurate but also sensitive to the diverse backgrounds and perspectives of the community, ultimately contributing to more inclusive and effective public health communication.
