Student Choice Competency #2 (according to your Appendix A)
Throughout my internship with the North Carolina Serious Illness Coalition, I focused on developing new methods to communicate public health information through social media. My main goal was to create content that spoke directly to a non-academic, non-peer audience. One of the key deliverables was crafting engaging fact sheets and short videos that simplified complex health concepts, making them accessible to the general public. This experience was instrumental in showcasing my progress toward mastering the competency of communicating audience-appropriate public health content. The challenge lay in distilling intricate health information into clear, understandable messages without relying on technical terms. Crafting fact sheets honed my ability to convey essential health details concisely in writing, tailoring the content to a broader audience.
Simultaneously, creating short videos expanded my skills in oral presentation. I learned to use visuals, stories, and a friendly tone to effectively convey health information to a diverse audience. This hands-on experience emphasized the importance of clear communication in both written and spoken forms, especially when reaching out to those who may not have a background in academia. In essence, this deliverable not only demonstrated my growth in developing audience-appropriate content for social media but also equipped me with practical skills to bridge the gap between complex health information and the broader public.
