Teachers reflect on specific learning experiences and analyze what worked and what they would do differently next time. Teachers also reflect on student progress and success. Reflection involves thinking about actions, reviewing evidence, identifying strengths and opportunities, and seeking new knowledge and new perspectives to enhance practice. In addition to analyzing their own actions, teachers analyze the results of student assessments and receive feedback from colleagues. Using all this information, teachers learn how they can be most effective at improving student outcomes.

Effective teachers keep records of student grades and other aspects of assessment. Documenting student progress goes beyond grades. Teachers keep track of students' progress on their specific, even individual, learning and behavior goals, participation, and wellbeing. Teachers make this information accessible to students and their caregivers. Successful teachers engage students and their families in goal setting, tracking progress, and celebrating attainment. Success in this component occurs when students are aware of their own progress, able to describe it, and take responsibility for their progress while demonstrating joy in their achievements. 

Successful teachers realize that students' success comes from a community effort, and they prioritize communication and respect with families and communities. Teachers operate with the mindset that views families and other members of the community as co- teachers, partners, and resources. Teachers understand the cultural background of students and make sure that they feel welcomed and included. Effective teachers partner with families and communities to create a learning community. They ensure that families are informed about the learning program, and they invite families to engage in learning experiences. 

Teachers work collaboratively and engage in inquiry about effective practice. Teachers strive to realize the full potential of the school community and regard themselves as members and leaders in it. Teachers support one another, develop solutions, provide feedback, and strive to improve the learning experience for the whole community by analyzing student outcomes and implementing solutions.

Teachers continue to learn and seek out opportunities to broaden their knowledge and sharpen their skills. The classroom thrives when educators love learning. Teachers collaborate with one another and other professionals to enhance their subject knowledge and master new skills and methods. They may pursue their formal education for a degree or participate in coaching and mentoring. Effective teachers reflect on their experiences and create strategies to better meet the needs of their students.

Teachers acting in service of students hold the firm conviction that their work is important and learning is valuable for each and every student. They advocate for students and ensure their needs are met, that each learner is set up to succeed, and that policies are interpreted and implemented in accord with community values. Effective teachers respect and build on each student's background, culture, and unique strengths. In challenging and potentially subjective situations, teachers act in students' best interests.
