I was in the South Seattle College (SSC) BAS Sustainable Building Science Technology program out of the Georgetown campus and I graduated June 2020. A program-related internship is a requirement of the program and in January 2019 I started working for Karen Herndon Assistant Director, Capital Projects at SSC.
In the first six months, I created a file management access system in Excel with all the capital projects listed by building and cross-referenced with links to their respected documentation.
This has given me a thorough understanding of the building-related documentation, design drawings, schematics, O&M etc.
Being a student at the Georgetown campus while working on the main campus has given me a well-rounded understanding of both campuses for a total of roughly 1 million square feet of the built environment roughly 100 acres.
I studied the blueprints to every single building so I could get a grasp of what design plans were and what is on them, why there are different versions, and more importantly why as-builts are so important.
June 2019 - What started as an ordinary internship, turned into a Capital Projects Coordinator position where I continued to work until August 2020 and due to the Stay at Home Order that went into affect, was unable to continue my position.
Below are some things I did during that time.
I participated in the SSC Facilities Condition Survey Summer 2019
The SSC ADA compliance requirement study Spring/Summer 2019
I have attended numerous capital project meetings with projects in every phase and participated on the following projects:
Wellness Center, Design phase, $11,618,000 New Construction LEED Silver,
Ali Café Project, Construction Phase near completion, $362,000
Georgetown Building C Door/Window Replacement, Design through to completion, Project $96,000
The Roofing Project $215,000
The HVAC Replacement Project $500,000
The Automotive Renovation Project is the largest project on campus at the moment $24 million state renovation project, I was solely responsible for the $1.8 million Furnishing, Finishing, and Equipment (FFE) including the temporary relocation JOC projects $500,000
(If you ever had a chance to see the automotive building any time before the construction or if you recently have been to see the temporary set-up they have in autobody and the north end of the tech building, I coordinated all of that.)
I was assigned to coordinate the Welding Project $430,000
The day-to-day, such as
Writing work-orders
Purchase orders/invoices
Interacting with staff in facilities, Deans, IT, security, instructors
Contacting vendors/subs
Pre-meeting preparation/after meeting follow-up notes
Hired as Capital Project Coordinator, I was assigned to the Automotive Project.

The final project I did for the college was to take the data from the first project and use it to make a wiki SharePoint document library with the updated safety requirements effective May 2020 relative to COVID and returning to work under approved phases with appropriate higher education response planning.
Each building has its own page with pictures, floorplans with square footages and space assignments, along with whatever documentation went with that specific building. Different faculty was given access to needed information and the ability to search for the library in their current browser.
For example, Deans can see if rooms are assigned and to whom, along with the ability to contact that person right from that screen via email.
At the same time, someone in campus services can access a building and see what the last renovation project was or how old the roof is.
