The relationship between a counselor and client is important to build for a number of reasons. One of these reasons being that the stronger a rapport is between a counselor and client, the more trust the client will have to tell the counselor things honestly, with more detail. One of the ways a counselor can build this rapport with clients is by using skills that are taught to train the counselor to make the client feel heard. Some of these skills consist of probing, summarizing, and using empathy (Egan & Reese, 2018).
