The competent teacher has an in-depth understanding of content area knowledge that includes central concepts, methods of inquiry, structures of the disciplines, and content area literacy. The teacher creates meaningful learning experiences for each student based upon interactions among content area and pedagogical knowledge, and evidence-based practice.
Standard 2B states that the competent teacher understands major concepts, assumptions, debates, and principles; processes of inquiry; and theories that are central to the disciplines.
My own portfolio shows my understanding of art materials and how they work and what you can create within each material. I also have a knowledge of how these materials are stretched and the "rules" you can break with them which I often do, and I encourage my students to "break the rules" of the materials.

This was a lesson plan I created for students to discover how materials interact with watercolor on their own.
Standard 2K states that the competent teacher engages students in the process of critical thinking and inquiry and addresses standards of evidence in the disciplines.
I wanted the students to discover on their own the textures they could make with watercolor and how best to activate those materials. I wanted my students to have autonomy in deciding how to use the materials and what looks best for the art their creating.
