In your 8th grade year, we start digging deeper into why do people make art? How does art give a voice to an artist? And what do you want to share with the world? This semester’s exploration will include traditional and contemporary art -different art methods, non-traditional materials, thematic topics, and more. Along with skills and techniques you will expand your art vocabulary with the Elements of Art and Principles of Design. You will keep an art-journal to the collect observations you make, practice art techniques, and plan your artwork. Be ready to dissect and make art outside of the traditional box.
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
• Build knowledge of art vocabulary and aesthetics
• Understanding of the importance of art in the world, and be able to read, respond and connect to it
• Explore the idea of how the process of creating is equally important as the final outcome
• Be able to communicate visually and justify artistic choices they have made in a work
For our first unit we will:
review the strategies and tools artists use to convey a message
practice utilizing those same tools.
review the names and roles of the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design.
practice evaluating art based on formal properties.
produce our first two art pieces: a self portrait and a collaborative community mural, and choose the mediums, subject matter, and methods appropriate for each.
Anchor Standard 7: Responding-Perceive and analyze artistic work.
Anchor Standard 3: Creating-Refine and complete artistic work.
