Intro to Art is a semester-based studio art class that kicks off our school’s Visual Arts program. What sets Art 101 apart is our larger focus on “How to be an Explorer of the World”. Your mission as student-artists is to observe and document the visual world around you. You will keep a creative art-journal where you will record your explorations. You will be introduced to the Elements of Art, which are basically the “toolbox” for creating and understanding art. You will experiment with various mediums as you explore your creative side, and grow as explorers and artists. Be ready to proceed with curiosity!
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
• Learn how the Elements of Art are the building blocks of making artworks
• Build knowledge of art vocabulary and aesthetics
• Understanding of the importance of art in the world, and be able to read, respond and connect to it
• Explore the idea of how the process of creating is equally important as the final outcome
• Communicate visually and justify artistic choices they have made in a work
For our first unit we will learn the strategies and tools artists use to convey a message and practice utilizing those same tools. We we learn the names and roles of the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design. We will practice evaluating art based on formal properties. We will produce our first art piece, a pandemic self portrait, and choose the mediums, subject matter, and methods.
We will complete a second self portrait later in the term, after reciving formal drawing instruction, and our Unit 1 pandemic portraits will work as a benchmark with which to see the growth of our artistic skills.
Anchor Standard 7: Responding-Perceive and analyze artistic work.
Essential Question: What is an image? Where and how do we encounter images in our world? How do images influence our views of the world?
Enduring Understanding: Individual aesthetic and empathetic awareness developed through engagement with art can lead to understanding and appreciation of self, others, the natural world, and constructed environments.
Describe visual imagery based on expressive properties (i.e. content, formal elements of art and principles of design).
Using art vocabulary, analyze the components used in visual imagery to convey a message.
Analyze ways that visual components and cultural associations suggested by visual imagery are used to influence ideas, emotions and actions.
Anchor Standard 3: Creating-Refine and complete artistic work.
Essential Question: What role does persistence play in revising, refining and developing work? How do artists grow and become accomplished in art forms? How does collaboratively reflecting on a work help us experience it more fully and develop it more completely?
Enduring Understanding: Artists and designers develop excellence through practice and constructive critique, reflecting on, revising, and refining work over time.
Refine and adapt art works in consideration of the audience, and the context of the work with consideration to developing technical skills and organizational principles.
Choose from among experimental approaches and techniques to determine the most effective solution.
