As soon as NASA released its first images from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), the wheels in my head began to spin. As an artist, I am inspired by the natural world. As a human, I am fascinated with science and exploration. I wondered if my students would share the awe I feel when looking at these incredible images. I knew I would start the year out by celebrating the wondrous universe we live in, the amazing people who imagined and built this magnificent telescope, and the artists that use the night sky to create masterpieces.

Third, fourth, and fifth grade students will choose how to create artwork inspired either by JWST or beautiful night skies in memories or masterpieces. They will write their plans out in age-appropriate "grant proposals" to connect to the scientists who worked on the telescope.
First and second grade students choose techniques to learn and then create artwork inspired by JWST and art with starry skies.
Kindergarten students use oil pastels and watercolors to create a beautiful night sky with galaxies and stars in several colors
