Using trees as a point of entry, students practice observational drawing to get the feeling of the shapes and lines and build confidence in their abilities. Then, students are introduced to a series of masterpieces in a wide variety of styles. Students are asked to identify which qualities of each style they like and want to use. They use these observed preferences to envision, plan, and reflect on their own artwork.
Trees are a great way to explore realistic, stylized, surreal, and abstracted work, but students are encouraged to explore anything they are interested in using elements of the styles that intrigue them.
Nonobjective (completely abstract) work with geometric and organic shapes and lines are also an option!
