The grade 12 Visual Arts course acts as a culmination of the skills and creative thinking abilities developed throughout the grade 9, 10, and 11 Visual Arts courses. At this grade level, there is an expectation that students have already developed the necessary technical skills required to complete realistic drawings, paintings, and sculptures. This course instead focuses on encouraging students to think in more conceptual ways so that their artwork becomes more meaningful and individual. Common artworks that are created are the pop art sculpture, self-portrait, large scale typography drawings, and the abstract painting. Similar to the grade 11 Visual Arts course, art history lessons are presented weekly, beginning with the turn of the 20th Century and culminating with the work of current artists. Emerging themes and concepts from these art history lessons are expected to be applied to students' personal artworks. As this course prepares students for post-secondary choices in the arts, there is a focus on building and maintaining both a visual journal to document the creative process and a strong portfolio that showcases a wide variety of media choices and subject matter.
