The grade 10 Visual Arts course expands on some of the core concepts taught in the grade 9 Visual Arts course. Again, there is a focus on the elements and principles of design, as students begin to create original artworks that show an understanding of composition and design, as well as technical skills related to line design, value and shading, colour theory, and paint application. Art history lessons are presented thematically, with an emphasis on applying the main concepts of specific art movements to a personalized artwork. This is evident in the linear scratchboard assignment based on the Art Nouveau period, the realistic portrait drawing based on the photographic collection of Yousuf Karsh, and the acrylic graffiti painting assignment based on more current street artists like Keith Haring and Banksy. In preparation for the senior level art courses, students are also given the opportunity to create more individualised artworks based on a personal interest, as is the case with the watercolour painting unit and the final culminating figurative sculpture unit. This course provides an excellent overview of the various disciplines in the arts and allows students to decide if they wish to pursue a more independent style in the grade 11 and 12 Visual Arts courses.
