The grade 11 Visual Arts course builds upon the core concepts explored in the grade 9 and 10 Visual Arts courses, however students are encouraged to take these skills and apply them to more independent artworks that allow them to develop a personal style. Realistic portraiture drawing is again an important unit of study, with the scale increasing from the grade 10 portrait. Students are given an opportunity to create a fully independent painting in acrylic, with an emphasis on choosing subject matter, style, and scale. Plaster sculpture is used to create Venetian masks, an extension of one of the many topics of art history and visual culture studied in this course. Art history lessons are presented weekly, beginning with the Ancient Greeks and culminating at the end of the 19th Century with the work of Vincent Van Gogh and the Post-Impressionist painters. The final culminating painting allows students to demonstrate both their understanding of visual culture and their technical skills in an artwork that encourages thinking in more abstract and conceptual ways. This course not only builds upon previous skills, but also prepares students for the grade 12 Visual Arts course and subsequent post-secondary choices in the arts, as students begin to think about creating original artwork that would be suitable to use in their portfolio.

The grade 11 Illustration course has several features which will help students develop a portfolio that demonstrates a unique personal style and a high level of professional skills as a pathway to a post-secondary Illustration program at a competitive level. Some specific types of illustration that will be studied include: traditional, children’s, fantasy, comic book (superhero, anime and manga, etc.), fashion, graphic design, and animals & creatures.
As the course is completed, students' portfolios will demonstrate the following skills: drawing and an understanding of the figure; concepts of storytelling; the use of colour to convey feeling and mood; perspective and composition; mastery of techniques through use of a variety of artist materials (including marker and gouche paint); neatness and presentation.
