Session 1.1 Carefully designed sessions led by academics experienced in bringing the latest research into the classroom. Available in person or online.
Workshop 1.1 Hands-on workshops that engage pupils in experimental archaeology, designed to help them test hypotheses, explore processes, and evaluate evidence. Available only in person.
Step into the role of an archaeologist and discover how we uncover the stories hidden beneath our feet. In this session, we explore the tools and techniques used to investigate the past — from flying drones over forests to identify lost settlements, to analysing ancient buildings layer by layer, and even sampling material from Roman sewers to understand daily life (yes, really). From muddy trenches to cutting-edge 3D scanning, pupils will see how archaeologists piece together fragmentary evidence to reconstruct the human past.

In this workshop, pupils become artefact detectives, working with real and replica finds. Taking on the role of archaeologists, they examine each object closely, making careful observations about its function, origin and manufacture. Pupils produce technical drawings, take detailed photographs and record their findings collaboratively. Using the evidence they gather, they then write an illustrated report for each artefact, interpreting what it is, how it was used and what it reveals about life in the past.
