Workshop Hands-on workshops that engage pupils in experimental archaeology, designed to help them test hypotheses, explore processes, and evaluate evidence. Available only in person.
Step into the shoes of an archaeologist and discover how we uncover the stories buried beneath our feet. In this exciting session, we’ll explore the tools and techniques used to investigate the past, whether it’s flying drones over forests to spot lost cities, excavating ancient buildings layer by layer, or climbing into Roman sewers to sample ancient poo (yes, really!). From muddy trenches to cutting-edge 3D scanning, you’ll find out how archaeologists piece together the puzzle of history.

In this hands-on workshop, pupils will take part in the excavation of two ancient inhumation burials. Working like real archaeologists, they’ll uncover fascinating finds including oil lamps, pottery, jewellery, coins, glass. Through observation, discussion, and teamwork, pupils will learn how archaeologists interpret the past from the objects left behind—and experience the excitement of discovery for themselves!
Duration: 1.5 hours.
Price: £200
Level: KS2
Session requirements: this session requires the archaeologist to visit the school in advance to set up the archaeological excavation site. The setup consists of two large troughs (2 x 1 metres each) that will form the excavation area. A spacious indoor or sheltered space is essential to accommodate the dig, ensuring pupils can participate comfortably and safely in all weather conditions. Once your booking is confirmed, we will contact you to arrange a suitable time for the setup of the temporary excavation site.
Delivery: This session can be delivered in school.
In this workshop, pupils become artefact detectives, using real and replica finds uncovered during the excavation in Session KS2.1.2. Working like archaeologists, they will closely examine each object, making careful observations about its function, origin, and how it was made. Pupils will produce technical drawings, take detailed photographs, and record their findings on a shared observation board. Using the evidence they gather, they will then write an illustrated report for each artefact, interpreting what it was, how it was used, and what it can tell us about life in the past.
