The San Juan River is an important river in Colombia that originates in Cerro Caramanta (Antioquia, Farallones de Citará) and empties into the Pacific Ocean after traveling 380 km, between Andean and Chocó biogeographical regions, draining a basin of ca. 15000 km². The upper basin is located in the department of Risaralda, and the middle and lower basin in the department of Chocó. 

The present project is geographically located in the Upper Basin of the San Juan River, specifically in the municipality of Mistrató (Risaralda), in two public natural reserve areas (Distrito de Manejo Integrado Arrayanal, Senderos 'La Linda' and 'Barcinal') and a private reserve (Reserva de Avifauna Sutú); in addition to six veredas: Amá, Arkakay, Costa Rica, La Linda, La Trampa and Mampay.
