Use whatever materials you have. Make it realistic or more cartoony. Use color or don't. Keep it simple or get really detailed. Remember, the key is to SIMPLIFY SHAPES, vary objects and their relationship to eachother, and "memorialize a mundane moment in time." Make it SPECIFIC... not generic.
