Shopping
· Carry white “ID” cane or white cane.
· ASK FOR WHAT YOU NEED!
· When shopping alone and using public transportation, identify your entrance.
· Take time to orient yourself to the entrance/exit of the store.
· When doing personal shopping, take someone you trust with you.
· Ask to have items described according to texture, cut, and style.
· Ask for help to familiarize yourself with store shelf arrangement.
· Learn clusters of colors, sizes and shapes. (may need to do this by touch if appropriate)
· Group items on shopping list according to layout of store.
· Use a magnifier, penlight or flashlight for reading labels.
· Use small voice-activated tape recorder to record shopping lists.
· Call the store in advance to request assistance.
· Ask at service desk for assistance. Woodman’s, Pick n’ Save, Festival, and Wal-Mart personnel are very willing to help.
