At Apex Pest Control, we understand that finding a wasp nest on your property is stressful. Wasps are aggressive, fast-breeding insects — and a small problem becomes a serious infestation within days. What may start as occasional sightings can quickly turn into constant activity, particularly during the summer months when colonies expand rapidly and worker wasps become more defensive.
As the nest grows, so does the level of risk. Wasps will actively defend their colony if they feel threatened, and this often happens in everyday situations such as opening a window, using your garden, or simply walking past an entry point. Unlike bees, wasps can sting multiple times, and in larger numbers this can become dangerous, especially for children, pets, and anyone sensitive to stings. When nests are located in lofts, wall cavities, or near entrances, the likelihood of repeated encounters increases significantly.
We regularly deal with cases across Leeds where nests have developed unnoticed in hidden areas such as roof voids, soffits, and behind brickwork. By the time activity becomes visible, the colony is often already well established. This is why early action is so important. Delaying treatment not only allows the nest to grow larger but can also make the situation more difficult and hazardous to manage.
Our role is to remove that risk quickly and effectively. We take a controlled, professional approach to every wasp nest removal, ensuring the entire colony is targeted rather than just the visible insects. From the moment you contact us, the focus is on resolving the problem safely, reducing disruption, and restoring normal use of your home or property as soon as possible.
Wasp nests grow exponentially. Understanding the facts helps explain why professional treatment is urgent — and why waiting makes the problem worse.
A single nest at peak summer season can contain between 5,000 and 15,000 worker wasps. Left untreated, the population continues to expand throughout the active season.
The queen wasp produces 200–300 eggs per day during warm months. Each nest can generate 1,000–2,000 new queen wasps by the end of the season.
Approximately 1% of the UK population faces risk of severe allergic reaction to wasp stings. Children, elderly and outdoor workers are at higher exposure risk.
Wasp nests are active April to November, with peak aggression June through September — when they pose the greatest threat to family, pets and gardens.
DIY treatments fail in the majority of cases. Over-the-counter sprays kill wasps on contact only — they do not penetrate deep into the nest structure where the queen and developing pupae are protected. Without killing the queen, the nest rebuilds within days. Professional insecticide treatment reaches the entire nest structure and eliminates all life stages. Nests die completely within 2–4 days of treatment.
Leeds is a large, varied urban area encompassing dense city-centre streets, Victorian terraced rows, inter-war semi-detached estates, modern new-builds and expansive suburban gardens. Every one of these environments offers wasp colonies exactly what they need: sheltered cavities, proximity to food sources, and warm south-facing surfaces that heat up quickly in spring. The combination of Leeds's built environment and the relatively mild Yorkshire climate means that wasp nests are reported year after year, often in the same properties and on the same streets
One of the clearest signs that a wasp nest has become a genuine risk is sustained aggressive behaviour at entry and exit points to a building. When wasps are flying erratically near doorways, frequently entering through open windows, or buzzing persistently around the entrance to a porch or garage, it typically indicates that the colony is large, active and perceiving human movement as a threat.
Leeds is home to several wasp species, each with different nesting habits and aggression levels. Apex technicians are trained to identify and treat all common UK wasp types.
(Vespula vulgaris)
The most prevalent UK wasp species. A single colony can contain 6,000–10,000 workers. Highly aggressive in late summer, nesting in lofts, wall cavities, eaves and sheds. Yellow and black, 12–15mm.
(Vespula germanica)
Identified by three black dots on the face. Equally aggressive as the common wasp with similar nesting habits. A growing presence across the UK. Professional treatment is equally urgent.
(Dolichovespula sylvestris)
Slender build with a shield mark on the face. Builds papery nests in trees, shrubs and hedgerows above ground. Less common than Vespula species but still aggressive when disturbed.
(Vespa crabro)
Britain's largest wasp — brown and amber, not yellow and black. Nests can be basketball-sized and require specialist handling. If you suspect hornets, call Apex immediately on 0113 390 4270.
All wasp species treated by Apex receive professional insecticide treatment. If you are unsure of the species on your property, call us — we provide free identification advice over the phone.
A common misconception among Leeds homeowners is that a wasp nest becomes safer as summer progresses and autumn approaches. In fact, the opposite is true. In late summer, the colony's internal dynamics change significantly. The queen begins to reduce egg-laying, the production of new workers slows, and the colony begins to enter a phase of gradual decline. Worker wasps, no longer focused entirely on feeding larvae, find their behavioural regulation reduced.
Simultaneously, natural food sources — the insects and caterpillars that worker wasps catch to feed larvae — become scarcer. Workers increasingly seek out sugar sources, making them more persistent around outdoor food and drinks. The overall colony is more irritable, more defensive and more likely to sting at minor perceived provocations.
This is why the majority of wasp sting incidents reported in Leeds — and across the UK — occur in August and September, not in the peak of summer. A nest that has been present since April and treated as a minor nuisance throughout the summer can become suddenly and seriously dangerous in the final weeks of its active season.

Nests that are fully exposed — hanging from tree branches, visible beneath an eave, or inside an open shed — may in some cases be treated differently to fully enclosed cavity nests. Where direct access to the nest surface is possible, the technician may apply insecticide to the outer surface as well as the entry point, increasing the speed and certainty of contact kill. However, the principle remains the same: treatment must penetrate the inner nest structure to kill the queen.
For ground nests — established in abandoned rodent burrows or voids beneath paving — insecticide is applied into the entry burrow using a lance or puffer applicator. The technician ensures sufficient material is delivered into the gallery before stepping back to a safe distance. Ground nests often generate an intense and very fast defensive response, and proper technique and PPE are essential.
