Bee Removal

Bee Colony & Honey Bee Removal

Bees are important for the environment, and many people enjoy having them around their homes. However, sometimes bee colonies or honey bees can become a nuisance.

If you have a bee colony or bumblebees on your property and would like them removed, please contact a professional bee removal service. They will be able to safely remove the bees from your property and relocate them elsewhere.

How Do You Get Rid of Honey Bee Colonies?

A swarm or hive of whatever type of bee, may it be Africanized honey bees, European hornets, Carpenter bees, or Apis mellifera, need to be managed based on its location and whether or not it is establishing itself.

It isn’t a problem for honey bee swarms to move on after establishing a hive. However, a colony of honeybees establishing in a home must be removed.

Colony Removal

Swarm clusters are much easier to collect than honey bees in buildings. Only a few pounds of adult bees are present at the beginning of a colony, but those bees quickly begin to build comb, gather honey, and rear, new queens.

A well-established colony may have up to 100 lbs of honey, many lbs of bees and combs of beeswax at any given time. These nests can be difficult to remove. To start, one must determine where the combs are located and how big they are.

Using pesticides that are labelled for killing bees inside structures can kill honey bees in place inside buildings. However, this method of removal usually has unintended consequences.

There is a risk that adult bees, if piled up in a large pile, will retain their body moisture and rot, resulting in an unpleasant odour. The liquids from the decomposing mass often penetrate the structure, resulting in a costly replacement.

In the case of an established honey bee colony, killing it will create additional problems. A brood left unattended can also rot and develop an unpleasant odour. Leaving honey untouched can cause the cappings on honey cells to burst as moisture, fermentation, and gas are released.

Once the honey attaches to a surface, gravity will start pulling it down until it encounters a horizontal obstacle, like a window frame, doorframe, firebreak, ceiling, or floor.

Then, the honey seeps through the drywall, resulting in large amounts of cleanup and expensive replacements. Honey, wax and dead bees must be handled as hazardous waste if pesticides eliminate the bees.

Many local beekeepers use baffles and collection containers to protect and save the bees. If the homeowner uses a one-way wire screen device, the bees that leave the building can be forced to relocate into a hive that is placed next to the new entrance if the homeowner has a lot of patience and knowledge.

Because honeybees are great pollinators, some beekeepers scout bees, contacting them would be better than getting a pest controller to remove bees.

The more bees, the more complex the bee control. Make sure to look for someone who is qualified for the removal process.

If you are unable to find a local beekeeper who can help, contact Apex Pest Control, a pest control company that has experience removing bees. Pest controllers usually do bee removal by killing the bees first. Ensure you have the proper equipment and expertise to remove the colony yourself.

Reducing the Risk of Future Bee Invasions

The odour of beeswax remains after honey bee combs are removed from any location. The highly acute sense of smell of honey bees means that the odour of a previous nest will still be a lovely scent to otherwise-scouting honey bees long after the last nest has been abandoned.

As a result, all openings large enough to insert a pencil into that lead to spacious cavities in a building should be sealed after bees have been removed.

Caulking does not allow honey bees to chew their way into buildings; they are capable of chewing their way out of them. Screens with six or more meshes per inch can be used to cover larger potential entrances.

Cavities can be filled with expandable foam to eliminate nesting opportunities in large spaces. The area requiring examination and service for a corner entrance includes both sides of the building around the corner entrance.

The bees will move into a newly discovered void next to the old nesting site if they are able to reach it.

Make sure you understand what will occur when you arrange a bee removal. If the bees are killed in place, it will be less expensive than opening the cavity up, cleaning it out of bees and combs, filling it with insulation, reclosing up all entrances, and finishing it?

These steps are all included in a definitive job but can be expensive.

Whenever possible, it is best to have the contractor and beekeeper work together to open the hole, get rid of the bees, and seal it. The best choice would be to find a contractor who keeps bees.

Can Honey Bees Be Removed Without Killing Them?

Smoke

The most effective method of keeping honey bees away from your home is probably to use smoke. Smoke causes honey bees to assume a forest fire, so they leave when they smell it and most likely will never return. Burn dead firewood and cardboard right under the beehive to create a smoky fire. Keep your distance from the smoked-out bees. It is best to return inside if they become agitated.

Peppermint

Honey bees do not like the strong smell of peppermint. Peppermint plants can be planted in areas of your house that you don’t want bees to visit. Peppermint can help drive the bees away, plus you can use it whenever you need it.

Cinnamon

Honey bees are repelled by cinnamon’s strong smell. Sprinkle cinnamon on areas where you wish to repel a bee swarm. For it to last longer, you will need to do it every day for about a week. It’s a suitable method for driving bees away from your home but not entirely from your yard. This method should work for people who don’t mind bees overly close to their home but don’t want them around their porch or door.

Citronella

Most bees and mosquitoes are attracted to citronella. Citronella candles can be used to get bees out of hives that are inside. Getting them to leave won’t be easy, but it won’t harm them. Candles must be burned for several days in order to be effective. Windy or rainy weather will deter the bumble bees from going outside, so choose a day when it is not windy or wet.

Garlic Spray

We also know that honey bees have a strong sense of smell, and that garlic has an extremely strong smell. Garlic spray is created by crushing a couple of cloves of garlic and mixing them with water. Use it to try to entice them away from your home and hive.

When Should You Call an Exterminator for Honey Bees?

While DIY methods may help repel honey bees, they require much maintenance and are not always effective. Not to mention, bee stings can cause severe allergies.

A pest control service should be contacted if you notice an increase in bee aggression or find a hive on your property. If you try to remove the hive yourself, you’ll create a swarm of angry bees.

Professionals can also identify potential nesting sites, locate hives bee species, and remove them safely. Based on where it is located, hives can grow very large and complicated to remove. You wouldn’t want to disturb those solitary bees and create and honey bee swarm.

Bee hives must be removed entirely since any honey or wax left behind will attract more pests. Honey Bee removals can often be done professionally with minimal harm to the bees, but this is a job that should be left to the professionals.

If the bees don’t seem to bother you, or if they’re too expensive to remove, you may decide not to remove them. Nonetheless, eliminating bees is necessary, and the cost is worth it. By doing so, your home becomes more secure for everyone.

While honey bees may seem harmless, they can be a real threat to your home and family. Bright colours or lights are highly attractive for these insects, making them more inclined to contact other people’s living quarters.
