Moral charity

The Father. – My children, man is always looking for what best suits his weaknesses or virtues. Here below in this world of tribulations and vicissitudes, we talk as much about morality as we put it into practice. That is why it remains very vague to the mind that has the desire to possess materially rather than morally. Those who believe themselves to be elevated, mainly in matter, do not imagine that others, though humble and modest, could one day surpass them.

Without virtues it is not possible to appreciate one's own imperfections: the weaker we are and the stronger we believe ourselves to be, the more we are fooled by appearances and do not want to penetrate the interior: nevertheless, we will be convinced, through the practice of morality, that the unfortunate one is not the one who extends his hand, but rather the one who, in order to spare his brother this humiliation, refuses to satisfy his conscience.

We have said that in order to find happiness, one must practice the law of love and charity. In the absence of money, our pity brings consolation and good advice to the unfortunate. The man who works to fulfil his duties knows that moral charity is more effective than material charity and that it also gives more satisfaction; guided by it, we can move forward; our conscience will never reproach us for having gone too far. When we feel love vibrating within us, we will shed tears, we will touch hearts, we will be in harmony with our teaching and thus we will render great service; for the moral man is consulted, listened to by all who need light. Though poor, we can be more useful to our neighbour than by the greatest riches.

The sweetest consolations are often powerless in the face of great suffering. Yet, although we suffer trial after trial, should we give in to discouragement and remain inactive, neglecting the practice of the law of love and charity? Another way of exercising moral charity is to keep ourselves in a good state of mind so as to be able to withstand every trial. We are often discouraged, but do we prepare ourselves well when we are in a favourable environment? Let us know that we are only in a momentary rest, and let us expect that one of our fellow men will suddenly appear on our path; but let us take care not to see evil in it, but rather to see it as an instrument of our progress; we know that we cannot suffer because of others; We know that we cannot suffer because of others; let us accept the trial with patience and resignation, and happiness will come out of it, as great as the suffering has been, we will obtain an ethereal fluid which will give us more energy, which will make both of us understand that the spiritual life is the only life, that the corporeal world is only a reflection of it, an illusion, a very miserable chimera. Our sufferings enable us, by contrast, to better savour happiness; is it not in the great cold of winter, in the midst of snow and ice, that we especially appreciate the joys of summer? We often say in the sunny hours, "It's a nice day today, the weather is fine!" because then we remember the bad and make a comparison.
