Out of Scale

Exhibit 09

Description. The purpose for this exhibit is to create a deliberately mis-scaled image that is used to send or convey a message. Additionally, utilizing one or more of Photoshops new neural filters.

Contrast. The key points of contrast in the image come from the text that pops out of the image, these words are aided by the addition of a black drop shadow; the effect is subtle, however it is just enough not to distract but add an element of depth. Next, the building being placed in the hands of the woman is a conceptual contrast where there is a essence of the impossible despite being visually  represented here.

Repetition. The colors of the image are reinforcing in each portion of the picture, lower text is the color of the woman's skin and the building has had luminosity and color shades/tints adjusted, using the Harmonize neural filter, to the original background image.

Alignment. The building has been placed to be as close to a natural light resting in the hands as possible. Additionally, to add to the building fitting in to the hands a small gaussian blur was added to match the focus of the fingers. Below, the text is tucked into the image a bit more so that it does not feel crowded, the "W" is lined up with the bottom of the "r" in "Craft" and the offset tends to fit more with the angle of the hands.

Proximity. The text is contained close to each other, allowing a little overlap of the tails from "Craft" and is not so close to the hands that it is intruding on that portion of the image.

Photoshop. Begin by masking out the building with a combination of auto select, lasso tool, and mask refinement then bring the building image over to the hands. Line up the building for a rough idea where it should sit, then hide that layer; select and mask out the fingers and front portion of the hands refine the mask and soften the edges. Further align the building, apply brightness and curves adjustments to both building and fingers as needed. Next, set the building mask for smart filters and add a Harmonize neural filter using the original hands background as the reference layer, adjust the strength to match; follow up with a light gaussian blur filter to match focus. Now, use the eye drop tool to get the color of the skin, add the text and adjust to line up using nudging as needed, apply a small drop shadow of black to give the text a subtle amount of depth.
