Exhibit 03

Timeline

Repetition. I've used a very simple color scheme and repeated the fonts, shapes, and layout of text throughout. I used the step and repeat feature to quickly recreate my branches, circles, and fill planes near the title.

Description. For this exhibit I wanted to try to develop a graph, similar to what we saw in our reading. I tried to design a small timeline showing a few key airplanes from the 20th century in an interesting chronological branching line.

Contrast. I used the gradient of a light blue to white, and a hard purple line to cut through the light gradient. On each point of separation from the main line I made a small circle with a dark grey fill showing the year of the airplane. I used the grey instead of straight black because I didn't want those to feel like hard stops, but mild diversions. Each plane has a small drop shadow to make sure it stands out against the backdrop a bit more.

Alignment. The line flows down the side and straight down the middle of the image. Without really measuring I spaced the planes out by half, then half of that, and half of that distance. Hopefully, this will give the impression of the distance in time between each plane as they get more condensed. Knowing that we tend to gaze top left to right then bottom left to right, I tried to used the line to disrupt that natural sense by pulling your eyes down the line to the title and along the path.

Proximity. Each plane has its text tucked in around it which helps to tie them together and emphasize the spaces between them. Each branch extends to the plane in question guiding your attention to that blurb of information. Each date stamp stands right before the branch letting you know the timeframe of the information you're going to read.

Photoshop. I used the shape tool to create the rectangle and then skewed it to give it the angle. Once I had that shape I could replicate it and change the size until I had the downward line and the branching lines. I made the circles, replicated them and then selected them to align the text within them. Next I grabbed my plane images, used the object selection tool and refined in the mask until I had all four brought into the main image out of the branches. I selected each one, added an expansion to the selection and erased the branch within that selection. For the text I marked out a space with the marquee tool and cropped out of that section parts of the planes that overlapped. I added the name of the plane in Bebas Neue and the blurb in Georgia (good serif font for screens) as a Lorem Ipsum fill. For the title, I wanted the font to stand out a bit differently so found Gitan Latin on adobe stock, set 'key' as vertical and the rest as horizontal. To fill the space near the title I used the selection of the spitfire, flipped it, filled with a gradient with the grey and purple. After that, I used the step and repeat to make a scaled down copy.

Citation.

Revision. I've made small adjustments to the graphic, for simplification the "the" was removed from Kitty Hawk Flyer and because there is no necessary reason the quotations were removed from, Blackbird. Additionally, the title was adjusted to feature better contrast, the small planes near it were moved horizontally, this also allows a flow of empty space between title and feature.
