Shaped Walkway

Exhibit 08

Description. The purpose of this exhibit was to utilize shapes and the pen tool to design a interesting design while still utilizing the key basics of design.

Contrast. A basic doorway was used as the backdrop to the design, from the inside deep dark purples are used to contrast against the simple doorway. The gradient, duplicated shapes sharply cut from the expected, into the depth of the space background to a dark red planet. The text is a triad color from the purple of the walkway and is highlighted by a gradient of the same purple color.

Repetition. The color are various shades of purple, or a tint of the reds. The gradient shape of the walkway was made, warped to shape, then using the step-repeat tool, duplicated many times to create the look of distance.

Alignment. The space portions of the image are all centered within the doorframe back to the planet. The text is similarly center aligned and made to fit equally within the sides of the doorway.

Proximity. All text is kept upwards inside the doorway and the walkway and planet towards the bottom, leaving an empty 3rd of the doorway as empty "white" space. The entire space feature of the design is kept within the doorframe except for a purple haze that should seem to flow out of it.

Revision. To revise this design, the image was cropped on the sides to even out the open space there and it was cropped from the bottom to balance the empty space between the top and the bottom. Additionally, the text in the center was shrunk down to allow it more space within the doorway.

Photoshop. Starting with the doorway, the original door was masked out by using the pen tool to mark a path, switched to a selection, and masked. On another file a rectangle shape was made, a gradient applied to it, two corners were equally warped inward. Then, the shape was step-repeated to create the impression of depth. The image of a red planet was masked out of its background. Behind the planet a circle fill of red was applied, filtered with gaussian blur to give a light bleed effect. The space was placed behind the doorway, the planet and fill layer above that but below the walkway. The text was added with a strong sharp styling, blue from the purple color triad, and gradient from the purple itself. Kerning was adjusted to fit snug inside the doorway, the second words kerning was adjusted to justify with the first word. The light colored archway was selected using the quick selection tool, that selection was filled with the purple with a gaussian blur to give the effect that space if flowing out of the doorway.
