Bright's latest work on "Towards enhanced fatigue performance of advanced high-strength medium-carbon low-alloy steels: A comparative study between banded ultrafine bainitic and martensitic steels" is now published in Materials Science and Engineering A.
This study investigates how segregation-induced martensite–austenite (MA) bands enhance fatigue performance in automotive-grade steels. Two variants were studied: one with MA bands in an ultrafine bainitic (UFB) matrix, and another in a martensitic matrix via direct quenching and partitioning (DQ&P). UFB showed nearly double the fatigue life at high strain amplitude, while DQ&P offered higher strength due to finer martensitic laths and higher dislocation density. Crack paths were strongly influenced by microstructure, with deflections near MA bands and prior austenite grain boundaries (PAGBs). The findings highlight that incorporating finer and more uniformly distributed bands, as seen in the DQ&P steel, into the tougher UFB matrix could be a promising strategy to enhance fatigue resistance.
This work was conducted in collaboration with the Physical Metallurgy group, led by Prof. Mahesh Somani, at the University of Oulu, Finland.

Abhinav’s work on “Additively manufactured Co–Cr–Ni multi-principal element alloys with excellent strength and ductility at room and cryogenic temperatures,” was recently published in Virtual and Physical Prototyping.
This study explores the directed energy deposition (DED) of two non-equiatomic CoCrNi alloys engineered with tailored stacking fault energies—one high-SFE (HSFE) and one low-SFE (LSFE)—alongside an equiatomic variant for benchmarking. Mechanical testing revealed that LSFE outperformed HSFE in yield strength at both 298 K and 77 K, thanks to its higher Cr content and lower SFE. At room temperature, LSFE showed enhanced work hardening via twinning, while at cryogenic temperatures, both alloys activated dislocation slip, twinning, and ϵ-martensite formation. LSFE achieved >1 GPa strength with ~45% ductility at 77 K, while HSFE retained ~74% ductility with >800 MPa strength.
