The competent teacher understands the diverse characteristics and abilities of each student and how individuals develop and learn within the context of their social, economic, cultural, linguistic, and academic experiences. The teacher uses these experiences to create instructional opportunities that maximize student learning.
Rationale:
Artifact Description:
During my first placement, I decided to celebrate Hispanic Heritage month by doing two activities:
1. Los Machetes- A folkorico dance that teaches ABABC Form, steady beat and rhythm.
2.Bate, Bate, Chocolate- A spanish chant that teaches rhythm, steady beat and creating and playing an Ostinato, rounds and playing various instruments.
Both of these slides were created as visuals to be used for the class. Students 4-5th grade were able to learn the dance Los Machetes. Students K-5th grade were able to learn through various adaptations of Bate, Bate Chocolate.
Standard Connection:
This artifact is important because it teaches students different cultural music that few students can identify with. Students are able to socialize with the culture of Hispanic students and are able to partake in their traditions. According to the IPTS 1, Performance indicators 1L, "uses information about students' experiences, families and cultures and communities to create meaningful learning opportunities and enrich instruction for all students", teaching this lesson created the space for this standard to be met. It was very important to undertand and know prior to doing the activity the cultures, social and academic experience of the students in order to be able to teach them a material in a different language. Students were provided slides that allowed them to follow along to the dance and also the lyrics for them to be able to sing the song.
Reflection:
Under the lesson of the Los Machetes and Bate, Bate chocolate, Students learned how to move and do the steps with the correct steady beat and rhythm. Students were able to cnt using 4 beats and 16 beats showing their ability to count music. Students were able to use various instruments in the room to play the rhythm including: drums, bells, triangles, tambourines, shakers and other instruments. As I teacher this helped me see the importance of connecting with the diverse students in the classroom. This Experience taught me the importance of sharing my culture with student as a hispanic myself. I was also pleased to see how students enjoyed dancing the folkorico and chanting.
