This unit discusses emerging and global technology. For this unit we paired up with a partner and researched the culture and accessibility to the internet in different countries, while putting together a collaborative presentation. I chose India and my partner chose Benin. It was interesting to see the similarities and differences between the two countries, their digital divide, and how they are different. We also researched a piece of emerging technology and what impact it might have on society and what challenges it may bring along with it. For this, I chose to research PFAS destruction and learned a lot about how the future of destroying forever chemicals.
This was a lesson where I learned all about the digital divide, not only in the United States, but around the world. The partner I worked with and I put together a presentation and we both happened to choose developing countries, where the digital divide was more pronounced. It was interesting in the similarities they shared; in fact, they had more in common than differences. If I could do this project again, I likely would have chosen a more developed country and that might have provided a deeper insight in how industrialization plays a role in a country's digital divide. I also learned about cool new emerging technologies, not only PFAS destruction, which was my topic, but from my classmates' presentations: ranging from wearable techs for sleep apnea to using AI for specimen identification in laboratory samples.
