This focus of this unit was primarily on cybersecurity. The topics ranged from how people fall victims to online scams to examining news stories of incidents, that can have global implications. One assignment we did for this class was to take the cybersecurity training that employees at CCBC must take. These were structured lessons and assessments that explained the different types of cyberattacks, vulnerabilities, etc. The other component to this unit was a current events approach to learning about cybersecurity. We read and analyzed two articles related to cybersecurity and verified factuality, timeliness, and the sources and citations listed in the articles.
I've noticed that every time an image of a hacker is displayed in any form of media, it's always someone with hooded sweatshirt, with the hood up, and a laptop. I always found this to be hilarious, because in real life this would not happen. I think it says more about what the general population thinks about hooded sweatshirts, than what hackers look like.
All hackers have one apparently. In this quick stock photo search, even the guy without a hood up is still wearing a hooded sweatshirt.
This lesson was interesting because I took a cybersecurity training course from another institution. These were lessons that were similar to the ones I would have to take every year at my old job, but it was actually more engaging and challenging. However, the basic concepts and understanding was the same.
