Standard 4 - Learning Environment:
The competent teacher structures a safe and healthy learning environment that facilitates cultural and linguistic responsiveness, emotional well-being, self-efficacy, positive social interaction, mutual respect, active engagement, academic risk-taking, self-motivation, and personal goal-setting.
There is a specific rule in class, and that is to never say the phrase "I can't" to something I ask of you. I know that not every student is given a gift of artistic talent. I know that not every student is going to like the subject of Art. However, I am looking for effort and I am looking at how you manage your time. I feel that these two are key to submitting a great piece of work for a great grade in the end. Art is supposed to be fun, and I want my students to know that they can make anything they want as long as they put in the time and the effort. They'll soon realize that they can achieve nearly anything in my class.
Each student must put in the time and effort into their works, even if they do not like the subject or if they simply cannot draw. The student is asked to try before having the teacher come in and helping them with a specific piece of their work by having them rephrase their question to help encourage them to work on their own. Once I see that the student did tackle the obstacle but is still having problems, then I will come in to help them.
Each student that enters this class will be given a bin to put everything in. Their artworks and sketchbooks go in here, as well as their pencils. At the very bottom of the cart holds the supplies that the students will get out for their projects. One person at each table is assigned to get these supplies out every day.
There is a specific set-up that the students must follow when there are supplies already out on the table. Students must have their tables look like this example before being dismiss to help them understand the importance of cleaning up after themselves as well as setting up for the next class.
At the end of the day, the last class is asked to properly tidy up before leaving the class, meaning they must put away their supplies where they were found, as well as putting up the chairs (as long as there's no Art Club).
