The Elements of Art and Principles of Design are to help each grade learn some important vocabulary that they will be using throughout their time in class. Each of these terms are supposed to be represented in our Exploratory and Technical projects.
The Elements of Art and Principles of Design were hung up in the classroom so everyone can see, as well as we had our students create little booklets for their own reference as well.
The second week of class, we had our seventh grade students make this nifty little popup booklet that had them creating the Principals of Design. It was an interesting way to have the students take down notes versus having it be written somewhere in their sketchbooks. These booklets are always in the Portfolio Bins at the front of each table so they can have a look at it if they needed to use their notes.
Sixth and Eighth grade worked on Elements of Art. Sixth graders worked on designing different ice cream cones that got attached to their sketchbooks while eighth grade made a different pop-up booklet to keep in their portfolio bins.
This was also an important piece to cover in our classes, especially when we began exploring projects with color. Students need to remember the importance of Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary colors are before we dive into a colored project. Some grade levels move on to knowing Tint, Tone, and Shade, as well as Monochromatic and Complementary colors.
During our technical projects, students on the first day of the project will work on jotting down important vocabulary words that we will be using throughout our time working on said project.
To review, we play a game called Secret Word, where one student stands in front of our screen and a vocabulary word is written out. The students sitting need to give one-word clues to the person standing to figure out the word. It's an extremely fun game to play with all grade levels.
