Standard 18: Professionalism, Ethics and Legal Mandates

"The program provides candidates with an understanding of ways to develop a professional identity congruent with the knowledge of all aspects of professional functions, professional development, and organizational representation. The program provides candidates with knowledge of current legal mandates impacting school counselors and pupils. The program provides candidates with knowledge of the ethical standards and practices of the school counseling profession and how to apply these ethical standards to specific counseling situations,"

Statement of Intent

I believe that as a school counselor, my responsibility is to support and empower students by equipping them with the necessary tools for success both in and out of the classroom. This involves addressing their needs comprehensively, whether through counseling services, collaborating with stakeholders, connecting them with suitable external resources, or advocating for systemic improvements.

Services Offered

Individual or Group counseling sessions to support career, academic, and social-emotional development
Classroom Guidance lessons in the career, academic, and social-emotional areas
Crisis counseling and suicide risk assessments
Collaborate with COST team to provide services to better support students
Referrals to internal and external resources to support students and their families
Provide a safe and supportive school environment for students

Confidentiality

It is very crucial for me to practice confidentiality when supporting students. This is how students will feel safe and comfortable enough to seek support and trust me. However, there a few exceptions where confidentiality will have to be broken, which students are aware of from the beginning of our sessions. These exceptions include:

A student is believed to be harming themselves or harming others
A student is suspected of being abused/neglected
A court order is issued

Legal and Ethical Codes

I adhere to the ethical standards established by ASCA and CAMFT.
As a member of ASCA, I am covered for $1 million in professional liability coverage.
As a member of CAMFT, I have access to consultation services provided by their legal team, which will help me navigate various legal scenarios with my students.

Self Care

The ASCA Ethical Standards for School Counselors say that counselors should take care of their own emotional and physical health so they can do their best work. This means looking after themselves and getting help if they need it. When counselors practice self-care, they not only stay effective in helping students and staff, but also show their school community how to handle stress and tough times in a positive way.
